Unanimous Decision: Nelson Becomes Canada’s 3rd Genetically Engineered (GE) Free Zone

On November 3rd 2008, all 6 Nelson City Council members and the Mayor voted in favor of a resolution to make Nelson a Genetically Engineered Free zone, leaving an important legacy before the public goes to the polls on November 15th.

This resolution means that farmers in the Nelson area can continue to grow crops and save seed without fear of GE cross-contamination.

“This unanimous decision helps our campaign move forward as we will now look to bring other local governments on board,” says campaign spokesperson Kim Charlesworth.

The municipal resolution was presented to the council by Charlesworth and Jon Steinman, both members of the Kootenay Food Strategy Society. The chambers were filled with community members who supported the campaign, including one resident who held up a sign that read, “Say No to GMO” (genetically modified organisms).

Nelson is the third GE Free zone in Canada, with the Regional District of Powell River becoming the first in 2004, followed by Saltspring Island in 2005.

The GE-Free Kootenays campaign is being documented by the internationally-syndicated radio program Deconstructing Dinner. Audio and other resources about the campaign can be found at www.deconstructingdinner.ca.
